Lego SpongeBob and Friends Have Come A Long Way

SpongeBob SquarePants is a U.S. cartoon television series produced by one of the leading children’s networks in the world, Nickelodeon. The show first aired in the year 1999 and has now grown to be one of the biggest animated series ever shown in Nicktoons. The series showcases the life of a sea sponge named SpongeBob Squarepants in the land of Bikini Bottom, a fictional town right underneath the Pacific Ocean. The phenomenon created by the show has beennothing short of wondrous in that the range of the viewers’ ages is hardly distinguishable. This popularity has transcended to different products advertising the SpongeBob character, be it from action figures to bedtime pajamas. In 2007, Imation Electronics Products, under the brand of Npower, also introduced SpongeBob themed DVD players, digital cameras and flat screen televisions. Now, one of the most talked about SpongeBob merchandising efforts is the Lego SpongeBob themed toy building sets.

Lego SpongeBob Squarepants is said to be of the biggest of the building set series released by Lego since the start of the new millennium. The set was first introduced in 2006 along with other two themes: Lego Batman and Lego Avatar: The Last Airbender. Most of the Lego SpongeBob Squarepants building sets and minifigures were inspired by actual episodes run from the last three seasons of the animated show. Currently, the item is not available in stores worldwide but can be found in many stores in the U.S. and especially in on-line stores where good deals can usually be found.

The Lego SpongeBob Build-A-Bob-Set allows you to take a peak inside the head of SpongeBob Squarepants. Plankton, one of the supporting characters in the cartoon show, takes part in this collection, as he inhabits the brain of SpongeBob Squarepants. The actual minifigure stands over 11 inches tall, with features of plastic bubbles shooting out of Spongebob’s mouth and his round eyes spinning. The set contains 445 Lego pieces that can be customized in different ways by children preferably in the age range of 7-12 years old. The box comes with a thorough manual or guide with three-dimensional diagrams in assembling the intricate and colorful designs of the collectible. Other sets are also available for children to combine with the Build-A-Bob Set including Mrs. Puff’s Boating School, Chum Bucket, The Krusty Krab and many more. Two of the most recent sets released this January 2009 are the “Krusty Krab Adventures” and the “Good Neighbors in Bikini Bottom” inspired by the latest episodes of the animated series in December 2008.

The most popular of the building sets is the Lego SpongeBob Adventures at Bikini Bottom. The set highlights SpongeBob’s pineapple house, Patrick Star’s rock and even Squidward’s tiki home. The collection also includes SpongeBob, Squidward and Gary minifigures as well as tons of jellyfish. The building set also introduces Patrick’s motorboat with an actual pull back motor!

Aside from the actual sets and minifigures, Lego SpongeBob Squarepants also offers additional merchandise that will surely be enjoyed by preschoolers and young and old adults alike. Lego has also come up with keychains of the different characters in the cartoon series such as Patrick Star, Mr. Krabs, Squidward Tentacles, Mrs. Puff, Sandy Cheeks, and of course, Spongebob Squarepants himself. Pen sets are also available for the Lego SpongeBob collection.
